Four places, no centre
Borehamwood is the borough’s largest town and the seat of the council, and Elstree Studios sit on its edge. Bushey is the second largest and runs into Watford. Radlett is the smallest of the four and by some way the most expensive. Potters Bar is physically separated from the other three and looks towards Enfield and Barnet rather than towards Borehamwood. Shenley, Aldenham, Letchmore Heath and South Mimms are the villages between. Services content on this site has to cover all of them, so it does, whatever the masthead says.
What we report
Planning first, because in a borough ringed by green belt the planning register is where the arguments start. Along with it we use Hertsmere Borough Council’s committee papers and decisions, licensing notices, police.uk crime data, HM Land Registry sold prices, Food Standards Agency hygiene ratings, Environment Agency flood warnings for the local brooks, and company filings in The Gazette. Roads, schools and social care are Hertfordshire County Council’s responsibility, and we say so rather than pointing you at the wrong desk.
Reorganisation in 2028
Every council in Hertfordshire is due to be abolished in April 2028. Hertsmere is to be merged into a new South West Hertfordshire authority alongside Three Rivers and Watford. We will report the process from the published papers as it happens, and our reference pages will point at whichever body is actually responsible when you read them.
